100% Starfire Vineyard Syrah – Alc./ Vol: 14.1 – Ph: 3.72
Much like the Sangiovese, I also farmed and managed this fruit from the beginning at Starfire Vineyard in central Santa Ynez Valley. This vineyard produces 5 acres of Syrah Zaca 110R which grows beautifully in this given terroir. With only 5 tons yielded in 2013, this vineyard also expresses what can happen with dropping fruit and low yields: concentrated flavor and awesome color. This Syrah was 50% foot stomped, and aged in 50% new french oak barrels, creating many noticeable intricacies. Aged for 20 months. I find notes of ripe blueberry and blackberry fruits, toasty oak with slight black pepper.
PAIRS WITH: Complex, yet true to the varietal, I can only pair this with one of my favorite albums: The Rolling Stones: Exile on Main street (1972). This album has multiple different styles, while staying true to the Rock N Roll roots from which this band started. Rhythmic and melodic, with notes of blues, soul and country: this album has it all. I can’t think of a more appropriate album to pair with the unique convergence of farming and different wine making techniques represented in this Syrah.
